About 5 kW
A rule of thumb NZ installers use, for a room with a standard 2.4 m ceiling. High ceilings, big windows and open-plan spaces need more, so an installer should confirm it.
Sorted with heat pump specialists first, then electricians and other trades, each by Google rating and review count. Pukekohe is in the Cold zone on the heat pump energy label, like the rest of New Zealand, so compare models on their Cold-zone stars. How to compare heat pump brands

Homeowner guideThirteen heat pump installers work out of Pukekohe and the Franklin area at the southern edge of Auckland, and the town sits under Auckland Council, which is the building consent authority here. Most of them started as electricians. ThermalVolt, Van De Ven Electrical, Beaumont Electrical, DTS Electrical, LS Electrical Services, Maximum Electrical and Sublime Electrical all fit heat pumps next to switchboards, rewiring and lighting. Two businesses work almost entirely in heating and cooling: Perfect Air Pukekohe and A1 Heat Pumps.
The work here reaches well beyond the town centre. Van De Ven Electrical is based in Tuakau and covers Pukekohe, Te Kauwhata, Coromandel, Whitianga and Hauraki, a long way for a heat pump job. Beaumont Electrical works from Waiuku and takes calls in Pukekohe, Tuakau, Papakura, Drury and Bombay, and as far as Te Kauwhata in the north Waikato. Maximum Electrical, also in Waiuku, works across Franklin, Auckland and Waikato. Sublime Electrical is in Karaka, and CB AirCons is out at Pukekohe East.
Perfect Air Pukekohe and A1 Heat Pumps are where a homeowner goes for the full range of systems. Both fit wall mounted, floor console, ceiling cassette and ducted units, and both service and repair what they install. A1 Heat Pumps also has a ventilation range and takes on offices and retail premises as well as homes. Perfect Air has a branch in Auckland as well as its Pukekohe base and has been part of South Auckland and Franklin heating for a long time. Sublime Electrical also installs ducted heating alongside high wall units.
Hot water and ventilation turn up often in this market. DTS Electrical is a Mastercraft Electrical member run by a Pukekohe local, and it installs hot water heat pumps as well as space heating. HLS Ltd is a locally run Pukekohe business that combines heat pumps and air conditioning with solar, ventilation and EV chargers, and it travels to the customer. ThermalVolt is the Pukekohe base of the Ostle Electrical group and does residential, commercial and industrial jobs across Pukekohe and the surrounding South Auckland areas.
Review histories vary a lot. ThermalVolt is rated 5.0 from 75 reviews and CB AirCons 5.0 from 49. Perfect Air Pukekohe is at 4.7 from 44, Van De Ven Electrical 5.0 from 38, Beaumont Electrical 5.0 from 37 and DTS Electrical 4.9 from 37. A1 Heat Pumps holds 4.6 from 32. HLS Ltd has 5.0 from 7 reviews, Sublime Electrical 5.0 from 5 and Ezy Installs Airconditioning Ltd in Tuakau 5.0 from 5, so those ratings rest on only a handful of customers.
Councils across the country, Auckland Council among them, say a heat pump used for space heating does not usually need a building consent, as long as a registered electrician connects it to the supply. That is why so many of the installers around Pukekohe are electricians. Drury, Auckland, Kumeū, Thames and Whangaparāoa each have their own city page for people who live further out.
Ducted systems are installed by Perfect Air Pukekohe, A1 Heat Pumps and Sublime Electrical in Karaka. Perfect Air and A1 Heat Pumps also fit wall mounted units, floor consoles and ceiling cassettes, so a mixed job with ducted heating in the living areas and a single unit in a bedroom can go to one business.
Beaumont Electrical and Maximum Electrical are both based in Waiuku. Beaumont Electrical serves Pukekohe, Tuakau, Papakura, Drury and Bombay. Maximum Electrical works across Franklin, Auckland and Waikato and also does solar panels and battery storage, so it suits a home that wants both.
Van De Ven Electrical is a Tuakau electrician serving residential, commercial, rural and light industrial customers in Pukekohe and further afield. Ezy Installs Airconditioning Ltd is an air conditioning contractor in Tuakau with a 5.0 rating from 5 reviews. Phone to check which systems it fits.
Perfect Air Pukekohe and A1 Heat Pumps both service and repair heat pumps as well as installing them. Perfect Air has a long history in refrigeration and home heating in South Auckland and Franklin, and A1 Heat Pumps is a Pukekohe specialist that works on wall mounted, floor console, cassette and ducted systems.
Auckland Council, the consent authority for Pukekohe, says that in most residential cases installing a heat pump for space heating does not need a building consent. A licensed electrician must still connect it to the supply. Check the council's website for your own situation before work starts.
Typical installed prices in New Zealand run $2,000 to $3,200 for small high-wall, about 2.5 kW, $2,800 to $4,800 for medium high-wall, about 5 kW, $3,500 to $5,500 for large high-wall, about 8 kW, $12,000 to $22,000 for ducted, whole house. A Pukekohe quote moves with the size, the brand, how far the pipes run and where the outdoor unit goes. Based on published price guides from eight NZ installers and retailers, updated Oct 2026.
As a rough guide, allow about 120 watts per square metre in a well-insulated room, 140 in an average one and 160 in an older, draughty one. A 30 m² lounge works out at about 4.2 kW with average insulation and 4.8 kW if it loses heat. Heat pumps come in set sizes, so both round up to a 5 kW unit. Use the calculator above for your room, then have an installer confirm it.
