A ceiling cassette is set into the ceiling and spreads air in several directions from one square panel. It is common in open-plan living areas, shops and offices, where wall space is short. The installers below say they supply and install cassette or under-ceiling units.

A cassette needs space in the ceiling above it, so ask the installer to check the ceiling cavity, how the condensate will drain and where the outdoor unit will go. Compare quotes for units of the same kW size and star rating.

Do cassette heat pumps suit homes?

They suit open-plan rooms with room in the ceiling space above, and they keep walls clear. Many installers fit them in homes as well as in shops and offices; ask them to look at your ceiling first.

Does a cassette need a building consent?

Councils from Auckland to Central Otago say a heat pump that heats your home doesn't usually need a building consent. If the work cuts into structural framing, ask the installer and your council before the job starts.

How do I compare cassette quotes?

Ask for the heating capacity at 7°C and 2°C outside, the star rating, the drain arrangement and the outdoor unit position, itemised and in writing.
