How it works

  1. Tell us the job and which town you’re in.
  2. We pass it to one local installer we’ve checked by hand: we’ve read their reviews and website and spoken to them. No other installer sees it.
  3. They ring you, tell you who they are and talk the job through.

The high-wall unit is the heat pump most New Zealand homes have: an indoor unit mounted high on a wall, linked to an outdoor unit by a short pipe run. The installers below say they supply and install high-wall heat pumps.

The right size depends on the room, its windows and how well the house holds heat, which is why EECA advises talking to a professional about sizing. Compare quotes for units of the same kW, and use the star rating on the Zoned Energy Rating Label to compare efficiency.

Typical NZ installed prices

Heat pumpTypical installed price
Small high-wall, about 2.5 kW (bedroom, small room)$2,000 to $3,200
Medium high-wall, about 5 kW (lounge)$2,800 to $4,800
Large high-wall, about 8 kW (open-plan living)$3,500 to $5,500
Ducted, whole house$12,000 to $22,000

Installed prices, including GST, for a standard back-to-back install. Based on published price guides from eight NZ installers and retailers, updated Oct 2026. What changes the price

What size heat pump do you need?

Enter the room size and how well it holds heat for a rough size. An installer confirms it when they measure up.

About 5 kW

A rule of thumb NZ installers use, for a room with a standard 2.4 m ceiling. High ceilings, big windows and open-plan spaces need more, so an installer should confirm it.

High-Wall Heat Pumps by town

Landlords note: the Healthy Homes heating standard needs a fixed heater of at least 1.5 kW that can heat the main living room, with a thermostat, and a heat pump can meet it. The Heating Assessment Tool on tenancy.govt.nz works out the capacity the room needs.

Guides for high-wall heat pump installation

Common questions about high-wall heat pump installation

Can a high-wall heat pump meet the Healthy Homes heating standard?

Yes, a fixed heat pump is an acceptable heater under the standard, as long as it is at least 1.5 kW, can directly heat the main living room, has a thermostat and meets the room's required capacity. The Heating Assessment Tool on tenancy.govt.nz works that capacity out.

Do I need a building consent for a high-wall heat pump?

Usually not. Councils from Auckland to Central Otago say a heat pump that heats your home doesn't need one, but a registered electrician must connect it and certify the work. Check your council's district plan noise rules for where the outdoor unit can go.

Can Warmer Kiwi Homes help with the cost?

Warmer Kiwi Homes grants can cover part of the cost of a heat pump for eligible owners. Eligibility depends on a Community Services Card, a SuperGold Combo Card or the area you live in, so check EECA's website before you get quotes.
