What to have ready before the installer calls
- The rooms you want heated, with a rough size for each. The calculator above gives a starting kW figure.
- How the house is built: its age, whether the ceiling and floor are insulated, and whether it’s single or double glazed.
- Where the units could go. A photo of the wall inside and the outside wall behind it saves the installer guessing.
- Your switchboard, if it’s old. A photo helps them spot extra electrical work early.
- Any heat pump you already have: the brand and the model number from the sticker on the side, if you’re replacing or adding to it.
How to compare the quotes you get
Line quotes up on the same things: the exact model number, the heating output at 7°C and 2°C from the energy label, where both units go and how the pipes run, the electrical work, and the warranty. A cheaper quote for a smaller unit isn’t a saving if it can’t heat the room.
Ask whether the price covers a Certificate of Compliance for the wiring, removal of an old unit, and a base or brackets for the outdoor unit. Our guide to what a heat pump costs in NZ covers the rest, and what size heat pump you need explains the kW figures.
