A Hamilton winter has its own routine. The sky clears overnight, the air goes still, and by morning a thick fog has settled over the river and the low ground from Fairfield to Melville, often with a frost underneath it. The sun can take until late morning to burn through, so a house that never warmed up properly the night before stays cold and clammy for hours. Then summer arrives warm and humid, with the same damp air making bedrooms stuffy.
The city's housing mixes old and very new. Hamilton East, Claudelands and Frankton have villas, bungalows and post-war weatherboard homes, many of them sitting on river flats or near gullies where moisture hangs about. At the edges, Rototuna, Flagstaff and Peacocke keep adding streets of new builds, usually well insulated but often open-plan and two storeys. Getting the heat pump right means knowing which of those houses you're in, and these are the ten installers we'd trust to work it out.
Signs your Hamilton home needs a heat pump expert
Waikato winters reward a heat pump that is well sized and well kept. Any of the following is a good reason to get someone out before the fog season sets in.
- On foggy mornings the lounge is still cold at nine o'clock, even though the heat pump has been running since you got up.
- A house near the river or a gully stays damp, with wet windowsills, a musty smell in the wardrobes and mould spotting the curtains.
- The outdoor unit spends a long time iced over, stops more often than it used to, or knocks and rattles when it restarts. Have a look at our guide to heat pump faults first.
- You've moved into a two-storey new build with one unit downstairs, and the upstairs bedrooms swing between chilly in July and stuffy in January. A multi-room setup often fixes both.
- A sleepout, rumpus or home office still relies on a plug-in heater or an old gas heater to be usable in winter.

1. Superheat Electrical and Air-Conditioning
St Andrews, Hamilton
St Andrews heat pump specialists who do every job with their own staff
Twenty years of electrical, heat pump, air conditioning and ventilation work sit behind Superheat, which runs from Pukete Road in St Andrews and covers the Waikato and Waipā. The team are Registered Master Electricians and members of IRHACE, the professional body for the refrigeration and air conditioning trade. No subcontractors are used, so the people who quote are the people who install.
Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Hitachi, Samsung and Panasonic units come in high wall, floor, cassette, ducted and multi-split forms, and WiFi control can be added. SmartVent and other ventilation systems are fitted to meet the healthy homes rules for rentals. Businesses can book scheduled maintenance every three to six months, warranty policies for heat pumps and electrical work are published, and quotes are free.
Why they made the list
Every review is five stars, and the themes are consistent: the heat pump installs, workmanship, cleanliness and tidiness, then heat pump cleaning and prompt communication. A handful mention ducted installs specifically. Five brands and both refrigeration and electrical credentials in-house make it a strong first call for anything from one room to the whole house.

Frankton, Hamilton
Frankton heat pump specialists backed by two five-year warranties
Heating and cooling are all Goldstar does. From Haig Street in Frankton it handles advice, installation and servicing for homes and businesses in Hamilton, around the Waikato and over in Tauranga, and an installer visits to suggest a setup that fits the space. As an accredited Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric installer, it can offer a five year manufacturer warranty on those brands, and it adds its own five year workmanship warranty that includes a free check of the system. A section for landlords and a room size calculator, which asks how well insulated your home is, help narrow down the choice before you ring. Quotes are free and carry no obligation.

None of the others here comes close on the amount of feedback about heat pump installs, and efficiency is the next most common theme. An easy process, quick and tidy installs and competitive pricing follow. The workmanship warranty with a free check built in is a practical extra in a region where units run hard all winter.

All of its electricians hold registration and practising licences with the Electrical Workers Registration Board. Its work spans repairs and rewiring through to commercial and industrial jobs, solar, EV chargers, CCTV and inspections, including electrical warrants of fitness for campervans and caravans.

Lossnay heat recovery ventilation is offered for homes that need fresh air without losing warmth. A free site visit comes before the quote, pricing is upfront, and the team takes on homes, rentals, new builds, shops, offices and industrial sites.
Why they made the list

Hamilton Wide
A small Master Electrician business that gives straight advice on which unit to buy
X Electrical keeps things small and personal. The team are Registered Master Electricians, backing their work with the Master Electricians guarantee, and they cover upgrades, renovations, repairs, new builds, pool and spa wiring, home automation and LED lighting for homes and commercial clients. Solar is a big part of the business too, with more than five years of residential and commercial installs and ongoing maintenance checks.

Why they made the list
Cleanliness, a friendly team and polite staff are mentioned most, along with tidiness and attention to detail. Solar and battery work features heavily too, so if you're thinking about panels and a heat pump together, one firm can plan the electrical side of both. Fast, detailed quoting suits people comparing a few options.

6. Hamilton Home Heat Pumps
Hamilton Wide
Installs planned around Waikato fog, frost and humid summers
Hamilton Home Heat Pumps sizes its systems for the conditions on the Waikato valley floor: foggy, frosty winters and warm, humid summers. Its work runs from single-glazed villas in Hamilton East to new builds in Rototuna and Flagstaff, and out to Cambridge and Te Awamutu. A site visit checks the layout, the insulation and the best spot for the unit before a free, fixed-price quote is given.
High wall, floor console, ceiling cassette, multi-split and ducted heat pumps are all fitted, and the same systems cool and dehumidify in summer. A registered electrician does and certifies the electrical work, and someone holding an approved filler licence handles the refrigerant, with the paperwork supplied. Units carry the manufacturer's warranty, the team services and repairs what it installs, and it helps you check Warmer Kiwi Homes eligibility before you commit.
Why they made the list
With no reviews on record, the case rests on how it operates. Both the electrical and refrigerant work are handled by properly licensed people with paperwork to show for it, the full range of system types is available, and summer dehumidifying is part of the pitch rather than an afterthought. That suits a city this damp.

Picking a Hamilton heat pump installer
Start with how the unit will cope on a frosty, foggy morning. Ask each installer what output the model keeps at low outdoor temperatures and how they sized it for your rooms, not just the floor area. Our guide to sizing a heat pump sets out the key questions.
Think about the shape of the house. A villa or bungalow with separate rooms often does best with one high wall unit for the living room, plus smaller units or floor consoles in the bedrooms. A new two-storey home in Rototuna or Peacocke with good insulation and roof space may suit a ducted system, and our ducted or high wall comparison weighs them up.
If damp is the real problem, ask about ventilation as well. Several of these firms fit positive pressure or heat recovery systems, and a heat pump on its own won't fix a house that never airs out.
Ask who services the unit afterwards and how often. Units in the Waikato run for months at a time, and our heat pump servicing guide covers what a proper service involves.
Lastly, read the quotes closely: brand and model, where both units sit, the pipe run, who holds the electrical and refrigerant licences, and what the workmanship guarantee covers. To see whether a subsidy could apply to your home, read heat pump grants in NZ.
Every heat pump installer in Hamilton is on the Hamilton page, where you can filter by the job you need.
