What does a heat pump cost to install in Rangiora?
The price table draws on published price guides from eight New Zealand installers and retailers, with prices including GST for a standard back-to-back install. Back-to-back means the indoor unit sits on a wall with the outdoor unit directly behind it, so the pipe run between them is short.
In a typical home, a small high-wall unit of about 2.5 kW suits a bedroom or small room, a medium high-wall of about 5 kW suits a lounge, and a large high-wall of about 8 kW suits open plan living. A ducted system covers the whole house. Match the unit to the room, and read the guide to heat pump sizing if you are between two sizes. The ducted or high-wall comparison covers the bigger decision.
The energy label shows heating at 7°C and 2°C outside and cooling at 35°C, so compare quotes on those same figures.
What pushes a heat pump quote up or down?
Ask for the quote in writing with the pipe run and the wiring named, so both prices cover the same work. Under the Fair Trading Act a quote must not mislead, including about hidden costs. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, where no price has been set, you pay only a reasonable price.
Frosts can occur anywhere in New Zealand, and inland and southern towns see colder winters, so ask how the unit behaves on a cold day.
A quote can move either way once an installer has walked the property. These are the things that change the job:
- A longer pipe run between the indoor and outdoor units
- Awkward access or height for the outdoor unit
- A wall bracket or a floor-level pad
- Extra electrical work, such as a new circuit or a switchboard upgrade
- Removing an old unit
- A larger unit or a ducted system
